Bohemian has been based in North Sumatra longer than any other surf charter boat. Over the years our goal has never changed - simply to give our guests the best surfing holiday possible. Bohemian operates out of Gunugsitoli on Nias in North Sumatra and our typical charters go to the Banyak Islands, Treasure Island (Bangkaru), Babi, the Hinako Islands (Asu & Bawa) and the surf spots on Nias. On request we can also go south to the Telos or north to Simeulue. Most of our trips focus on the Banyaks and Treasure Island because this is what the guests want. When the swell drops we head for the Hinakos. Asu and Bawa are swell magnets. And since these spots work on different winds there is almost always a wave to be had. When the swell picks up these spots can often get bigger than the guests want. The Hinakos are just off the coast of Nias, so there are also a number of other waves close at hand. The skipper has years of experience in these waters and gets the latest swell and weather forecasts daily. He will let you know the best options on any given day and put you where you want to be, and also let you know when he thinks it may be a good idea to make a move to another surf spot.

We offer surfers the advantages of small group charters (6 pax) on Bohemian. Bohemian Baru, a brand new 62’ power cat, can carry up to 12 surfers and offers exclusive group bookings for groups of 8, 9 or 10 pax.

Bohemian was designed and built to be a surf charter boat. Bohemian is a 50’ catamaran with flared hulls and lots of headroom, Bohemian is spacious, comfortable and STABLE. Catamarans don't roll from side to side like other boats. On Bohemian you can put a can of beer down on the table and it will stay there. This makes it much more user-friendly, ESPECIALLY for people who are prone to sea-sickness. Built by surfers, for surfers, with the emphasis on function and practicality, Bohemian gives you the room you need to enjoy yourself. Bohemian is a 50' aluminum catamaran built to survey in Australia by owner/operator Steve Bridge. It was built for the specific purpose of surf charter. Guests on Bohemian sleep in twin-berth cabins (not dorm style accommodation). The saloon is light and airy with ample seating area, TV, VCD, and stereo. There is plenty of power available 24 hours a day to charge the batteries for your video cameras and other gear. The boat is fully air-conditioned, has a water maker, and is equipped with all modern navigational and safety equipment as well as a satellite phone. On deck there is plenty of room to lounge around in the cockpit or under a large deck tent where you can lay back and watch the action while you rest up for your next session.. Bohemian is powered by twin Yanmar diesel engines.

Bohemian has always had a well-deserved reputation for good food. Our Thai chefs make sure that meals are always something to look forward to, with plenty of delicious, healthy food. The fishing is good and fresh caught fish features big on the menu. The tuna, mahi mahi or king mackerel that you caught that day will be on the table that night. We bring in all the western food you like from Medan for every trip and load up on prawns, squid, chicken and plenty of fresh fruit and veggies from the local markets.

The unspoiled beauty of these remote islands off the coast of North Sumatra provides a perfect setting for the world-class waves. The Banyak Islands and Bangkaru are part of a wild-life conservation district. Treasure Island has virgin rain forest growing down to the edge of beautiful beaches and the crystal clear waters host a wide variety of marine life. One of the primary turtle nesting beaches in all of Sumatra is located here.

So what are you waiting for? Experience the perfection of Treasure Island and the Banyaks; the power of Bawa and Asu. Paddle into the world famous right hander at Lagundri Bay on Nias or surf at spots that you have never heard of. Depending on the conditions and your preferences, we can take you surfing at places so perfect that you'll think you're dreaming, other spots heavy enough to challenge even battle-scarred Indo veterans, and mellow waves that are just right for a good, fun surf.

Our typical charters start on Monday and finish on Friday. Bohemian is based out of Nias in North Sumatra. Guests are responsible for their own international air travel to and from Medan, North Sumatra. Medan is a busy airport and there are daily flights to and from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta. Guests must fly into Medan early Monday morning the day the charter begins. Most of our guests arrive on Silkair MI232 from Singapore which gets into Medan at around 08:00. Silkair is Singapore Airlines regional SE Asia carrier so if guests fly from Europe, Australia, or America by Singapore Airlines and then Silkair from Singapore to Medan it is like taking the same airline all the way. Both Singapore Airlines and Silkair are also very reasonable to surfers traveling with board bags. Some guests prefer to arrive in Medan the day before or to fly by other carriers. All flight itineraries should be cleared with Bohemian in advance (before your purchase your tickets) to make sure they work with the charter schedule.

After guests clear immigration and customs in Medan they are met outside international arrivals by our Medan agent and transferred to the domestic air terminal for their flight to Nias. Bohemian departs late Monday afternoon or evening to make the crossing out to the islands and arrives at the surf spots early Tuesday morning. At the end of the charter Bohemian arrives back in Nias Friday early am. Guests fly Nias-Medan and can fly out of Medan that same night (Friday).

Bohemian is a North Sumatra charter boat – we have been based up north longer than any other charter boat. Dependent on swell and conditions, we go to the Banyaks, Bangkaru (Treasure Island), Simeulue, Babi, Hinakos (Asu & Bawa), Nias, or Telos. We prefer to stay “up north” (Banyaks & TI) most of the time and so do most of our guests. But unlike most of the boats operating up north, Bohemian is always ready to make a run down to the Hinakos when the swell drops or if the guests want to tackle some big surf when there is swell.

The charter price includes all meals and soft drinks on board the boat (and Bohemian has a well deserved reputation for very good food), plus the use of on board fishing equipment and snorkeling gear. We will arrange the purchase of beer for you in Nias at local prices. The price also includes R/T flight Medan-Nias-Medan and transfers to and from the boat.
